Stiffness in his left leg allows him to be "springy" (releasing the stored energy in the tendons/muscles without leaking any energy through a collapsed heel or deep knee bend). In Phase 2 of my Online Vertical Jump System, we use this simple/effective exercise to develop stiffness in the ankle/knee that leads to better "spring" in your jump. Hold a 1/4 squat position on one leg WITHOUT letting your heel touch the floor. We progressively add weight to this exercise with dumbbells or weighted vests and gradually increase the hold time per set. Beginners usually have issues with balancing on the ball of the foot, so holding onto something for assistance is advised.
